Hamas spokes Abu Zuhari: We understand that Fateh protests are against their leadership

Gaza (Ma'an) – A Hamas spokesperson in Gaza says he understands that Fateh protests are against their own leadership, and that all must respect the democratic choice of the Palestinian people.

Sami Abu Zuhari spoke Sunday asking for respect for the choice made during the democratic Palestinian Legislative Council elections. He called on the people of the US and Europe to pressure their governments into respecting the will of the Palestinian people.

Abu Zuhari reiterated what has been stated a dozen times by internal and external groups. The elections were free and clear as witnessed by local and international monitors.

The Hamas spokesperson expressed astonishment at US and EU government threats to cease aid to the Palestinian people, ‘just because the Palestinians chose their representatives whom they believe will represent them in the correct manner.’

Abu Zuhari continued, ‘This is in the time that those governments are supporting the regimes of corruption and dictatorship with tax payer's money.’

He said, ‘In spite of this unfriendly position, Hamas remains interested in dealing openly with the West on the basis of mutual respect.’

Regarding wide-spread Fateh members angry demonstrations, Abu Zuhari said, ‘These are protests against the Fateh leadership, and we understand that.’

However, the Hamas spokesperson said that it is necessary to stop all shows of arms during the demonstrations.

‘These appearances should remain within the internal differences of Fateh and not affect the higher interests of Palestinians.’

He pointed out that some demonstrations have an anti-Hamas tone to them, with some protesters tearing Hamas posters.

Abu Zuhari addressed Director of Palestine Police Forces, Ala' Hosni, on the issue. ‘He is an employee. It is not up to him to make decisions regarding Palestinian security and police.’

Abu Zuhari continued to speak indirectly to Hosni. ‘There are rules and laws which arrange the relation between the security sources and the government. Consequently we do feel astonished when we note that some in the security forces do not acknowledge that Hamas came to reform, not to punish.’

The Hamas spokesperson described Fateh Falcon threats as ‘incitement against Hamas.’
