PLO deputy to meet with Hamas-led PA foreign minister in Cairo

The head of the Palestine Liberation Organization's political office, Farouk Kaddoumi, will meet with Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister, and Hamas member, Mahmoud Al-Zahar, an Arab language newspaper based in the United Arab Emirates, Al-Bayan, reported Friday.

Quoting Hamas' deputy political bureau chief, Moussa Abu Marzouk, the newspaper reported that the purpose of the meeting is to ascertain and divide the responsibilities of both men whose jobs include publicly explaining the PA's foreign policy.

Marzouk, who like Kaddoumi is based in Damascus, served as a go-between in arranging the meeting, which in all likelihood will take place Sunday in Cairo, Palestinian sources said.

Al-Zahar's predecessor, Nasser Al-Kidwa, frequently clashed with Kaddoumi over matters concerning ministerial powers which both men claimed was within their jurisdiction, including the appointing of ambassadors and diplomatic representatives as PA envoys in foreign missions.

Al-Kidwa, a Fatah member and late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's nephew, ended his term as foreign minister thanks to Hamas' victory in parliamentary elections in the territories in January.
