Israelis kill Bethlehem 'militant'

Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian militant in a raid in the West Bank town of Bethlehem.

An army spokeswoman said the man was an al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades member and had refused to give himself up when Israeli troops tried to arrest him.

Witnesses said troops in civilian dress chased Raed Abayat onto the roof of a building where they shot him dead.

A second man was detained during the operation. The army said it had arrested 12 Palestinians overnight.

One eyewitness, quoted by the AFP news agency, said the troops beat Mr Abayat, 31, before firing the fatal shot.

‘I then saw his body on the ground at the foot of the building,’ the witness was quoted saying.

Israeli intelligence officials said Mr Abayat had been wanted by Israel for five years in connection with the killing of Israeli civilians.

He was armed with an M-16 assault rifle and was carrying an explosive device, the army said.

Israeli forces surround Bethlehem and its neighbouring towns, launching frequent raids into the area. The area was occupied by Israel in 1967 war.

Israeli forces have stepped up operations against Palestinian 'militants' in the wake of a suicide bombing on Thursday night which killed four Israelis.

The al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an offshoot of the mainstream Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the attack.
