Saudi FM meets US Mideast envoy Wed

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal met with US Middle East envoy David Welch who is on a regional tour that centers on aid to the Palestinians under the Hamas-led government.

The two men discussed regional and international matters, the official SPA news agency said without providing details.

Welch arrived in the oil-rich kingdom after spending Monday and Tuesday in Cairo. He was in Amman at the weekend discussing aid to the Palestinians with representatives of the so-called Middle East quartet.

The European Union, the United States, the United Nations and Russia warned Thursday that direct aid to the Palestinian Authority would ‘inevitably’ be affected as long as the Hamas-led government was not committed to peace.

A US official, speaking Friday on condition of anonymity, said the United States wanted to change its aid ‘to bypass the foreign ministry’ of the Palestinian Authority.

The United States froze its aid to the Palestinian Authority in January, after Hamas -- which is considered a ‘terrorist’ organisation by the US government and the European Union -- won elections.

Israel has vowed to have no dealings with a government led by a group which has carried out dozens of suicide bombings during a five-year uprising.

Saudi Arabia has repeatedly appealed for aid to the Palestinians to continue, saying the Palestinian people should not be punished over Hamas's rise to power in the legislative elections.
