Excerpts from the political agreement reached by leaders of the two main Palestinian movements, Fatah and Hamas, as well as several smaller groups:
‘The Palestinian people ... seek to ... establish their independent state with Jerusalem as a capital in all the lands occupied in 1967, and to guarantee the right of return of refugees, and to liberate all prisoners, based on the historical right of our people in the land of our fathers and grandfathers, and to the U.N. resolutions.’
‘The right of the Palestinian people to resistance ... would concentrate their resistance in the lands occupied in 1967.’
‘National interest requires forming a new Palestinian national council before the end of 2006, in a way that will guarantee representing all the Palestinian national and Islamic factions.’
‘Conducting (peace) negotiations is the authority of the PLO, and the president of the Palestinian Authority.’
