PNI Mourns Death of Italian Solidarity Activist

Ramallah, 12-08-06: Palestinian National Initiative head, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, expressed his deepest sympathies today over the death of Italian solidarity activist, Angelo Frammartino, who was murdered in Jerusalem on Thursday.

Angelo had travelled to Palestine in early August to take part in a summer camp co-organized by ARCI, an Italian non-governmental organisation with a long history of solidarity and cooperation with Palestinian civil society.  He had been due to return to Italy tomorrow, but was fatally wounded in a knife attack outside the walls of Jerusalem’s old city.  The details surrounding his death remain unclear.

Dr. Barghouthi condemned the killing in the strongest possible terms, and offered his sincerest condolences to Angelo’s family and friends.  He paid tribute to Angelo’s passion to make a difference by travelling to Palestine as a gesture of solidarity with the Palestinian people, and expressed profound sorrow that his young life had been taken here.

Dr. Barghouthi vowed that Angelo’s tragic death would serve only to strengthen ties with ARCI and with the Italian people in their joint struggle to bring about a peaceful and just end to Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestine.
