IDF troops in Jenin kill 64-year-old man holding a flashlight

Israel Defense Forces troops killed a 64-year-old man in Jenin on Sunday, it was released for publication Monday.

Palestinian sources said Monday that Sabri Khalil worked as a night watchman at a local school. After he shined his flashlight on a passing car, soldiers patrolling the city shot him in the chest, killing him.

The IDF confirmed that soldiers shot a Palestinian standing on a rooftop, saying he had apparently been holding a weapon at the time. An army spokesman said that in retrospect, it appears that the man was holding a flashlight.

The army is investigating the incident.

Witnesses: IDF strikes in Gaza kill 4 Palestinian 'militants', 1 civilian
Four Palestinian 'militants' were killed early Monday in an Israel Air Force strike on central Gaza, Palestinian doctors said.

Later on Monday, Israel Defense Forces troops shot dead a civilian in the southern Gaza Strip, medics reported.

The four 'militants', two members of a Hamas-led security force and two presidential guards, were standing on a street in the Shajaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City when a missile hit them, witnesses said. The four were severely burned and killed, Palestinian doctors said.

The IDF spokesman said that troops operating in the area shot and killed three armed Palestinians in an exchange of fire. The spokesman did not know of a fourth man killed.

IDF troops had been operating in Shejaiyeh since Saturday.

Later Monday, IDF troops shot a Palestinian near Rafah airport in the southern Gaza Strip, medics said, identifying him as a civilian. The man was killed in the shooting. The Israeli army had no immediate comment.

In separate violence, members of the Hamas-led police force opened fire on a Palestinian car near the town of Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip, killing one of its passengers.

A spokesman for the force said the car matched the description of a stolen vehicle and its driver had ignored orders to stop at a checkpoint.

'The car drove into members of the squad, who fired twice in the air to try to force it to stop, and they were surprised by gunshots from passengers in the vehicle,' the spokesman said.

'Members of the force were forced to return fire,' she said.

Four Palestinians killed in Sunday strikes

IAF air strikes in the Gaza Strip on Sunday killed three Palestinians and wounded two television cameramen, while a fourth Palestinian was killed and a 6-year-old boy critically wounded by Israeli sniper fire, Palestinian officials and residents said.

Also Sunday, IDF jeeps surrounded the house of Hamas parliament member Mahmoud Musleh in Ramallah, and soldiers entered and arrested him, Musleh's daughter and Palestinian security officials said. The army confirmed the arrest.

The first Gaza air strike, in the early hours, hit an armored car belonging to the Reuters news agency, moderately wounding five people, including the two cameramen, Palestinian witnesses and hospital officials said.

The IDF said that in the darkness, no press markings were seen on the vehicle. The army said the car was moving in a suspicious manner near troops inside a combat zone.

A Hamas militant was killed in another air raid, hospital officials said.

The army later reported another strike against a group of Palestinians carrying an anti-tank missile. Hamas said one of its men was killed in that attack.

Another Palestinian was killed late Sunday in a similar strike aimed at
'militants' carrying a missile near the Israeli border, residents said. The man was standing near his home, and it was not known whether he was a militant. The army confirmed that air strike as well.

On Sunday afternoon, a 20-year-old Palestinian man was shot in the head by a sniper in the Shajaiyeh neighborhood of Gaza City, hospital officials said.

The army said the man approached troops while he was carrying an anti-tank missile.

A 6-year-old boy was shot in the chest and critically wounded in the same area later Sunday outside his home, Palestinian medical officials said. The army was investigating the report.

The violence came as Israeli soldiers - backed by two dozen tanks, two
bulldozers, helicopters and unmanned aerial drones - combed an area just inside the Gaza Strip in what the army said was a search for terror infrastructure, particularly tunnels.

Reuters crewmembers hurt in IAF attack

In Gaza City, the Reuters crew members, Fadel Shama'a, 23, and Sabah Hamida, 25, who worked for a local television company, were in Shajaiyeh overnight to film the military activity.

They had just opened the doors of their armored vehicle when it was hit by two missiles, according to Shamas Odeh, chief of Reuters TV in Gaza.

The cameramen and three bystanders were moderately injured by shrapnel and all five were sent for surgery, hospital officials said.

Captain Noa Meir, an IDF spokeswoman, said the vehicle was the only one in the combat area, was driving suspiciously and came near Israeli forces during the nighttime raid.

'It was seen as a threat,' she said. 'There were no clear TV marks (on the car). At least we didn't see one.'

The Foreign Press Association, a group representing journalists covering Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, harshly criticized the army. It was the vehicle was 'clearly marked' and demanded a 'full and transparent investigation into this terrible incident.'

Israel stepped up raids and air strikes in Gaza after a June 25 raid by Hamas-linked 'militants', who tunneled into Israel, captured a soldier and took him back to Gaza, where he is believed to be held in an underground hideout. The soldier, Gilad Shalit, will turn 20 on Monday.
