Barghouthi secures European support for coalition government

Madrid: Legislative Council deputy and Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, continues to speak out for a coalition government to combat occupation.

Dr. Barghouthi met with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos in Madrid yesterday and explained the difficult conditions prevalent for Palestinians as a result of the siege, closure, starvation policy, and Wall and settlement expansion.

Dr. Barghouthi further outlined Friday his meeting with Moratinos, saying they discussed forming a national unity government as the way out from under the current crisis and difficult conditions. ‘We must work hard in order to end the siege and arbitrary Israeli measures against the Palestinians.’

The PLC member stressed the importance of the international community accepting a coalition government ‘which will lead to breaking the unjust embargo and isolation against our people that the political stalemate that Israel is trying to enshrine.’

And the international conference was back on the table. Dr. Barghouthi is committed to the conference that will be based in the Arab Initiative, and will call for implementation of existing United Nations resolutions and international law. If those were in fact honored, the Israeli occupation, and its ensuing terrors, would necessarily end.

‘This would put an end to 40 years of Israeli occupation and secure the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to establish their own democratic, free and independent Palestinian state.’

The Spanish Foreign Minister expressed Europe’s readiness to accept a coalition government operating under the National Accord, and to deal with them in a positive manner.
