Damascus - Ma'an - Palestinian Legislative Council member, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi has, on Thursday, met with the head of the Hamas political bureau, Khalid Mash'al, and a Hamas delegation. They discussed the current efforts to compose a unity government aimed at lifting the siege of the Palestinian people.
Barghouthi also met with several representatives of Palestinian factions, such as the member of the political bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Mahir Tahir, and a segment of the leadership of the Islamic Jihad movement, among others.
'The conveners,' said Barghouthi, 'stressed the importance of building on the Madrid+15 conference [see special feature], so as to support the steadfast endeavours of the Palestinians'. The most significant of the results of the conference was the rejection of party and transitional agreements, and concentration instead on the comprehensive principle in the peace process. They also affirmed that international legitimacy had given the Palestinian people the right to self determination after the termination of the occupation, which has now entered its 40th year.
There was another meeting between Dr Barghouthi and the deputy Syrian president, Farouq Ash-Shari', in which they discussed the latest developments in the region and the importance of Syrian-Palestinian cooperation in accomplishing a triumph for the Palestinian cause.
