Ramallah, 16-12-06: In response to the decision by President Mahmoud Abbas to call for early presidential and legislative elections in a speech to the Palestinian people today, the Palestinian National Initiative (PNI) stressed that the formation of a national unity government is still the most effective way towards addressing the current crisis.
A PNI spokesperson underlined that the option of forming a national unity government is still viable, and that the movement would continue focusing its efforts in this direction.
The spokesperson added that early elections should serve as a last resort to escape from the current impasse, but that this should be a process agreed upon by all factions and movements, and that elections should act as a means to unite the Palestinian people, not divide them further.
