New Information Minister: media to become more internationally savvy

The new Information Minister, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, said that the unity government put in place on Saturday is ‘the best Palestinian government in history.‘

He told PNN today, ‘It combines the strength of the position and strategy to maintain Palestinian rights and political flexibility to be smart in dealing with the international community, which is what we were missing in the past.‘ The new government began work yesterday and by today the Information Minister had also been announced as its Spokesperson.

Dr. Barghouthi said on Sunday that the siege imposed by Israel on the Palestinian people has begun to dissipate. He stressed the importance of the national media in delivering the reality to the international community. Dr. Barghouthi said the influence cannot be be underestimated.

He told PNN today, ‘Our problem in the past was that our media did not reach beyond itself. We will focus on moving information to the outside so that we can become more influential in the world around us.‘

The new Information Minister also said that his priorities include ‘the concerns of the Palestinian journalist.‘

Concerning ways to unify the Palestinian media in the coming period, Dr. Barghouthi said, ‘This is an important goal of the ministry and of the government. I assure you that the sentiments from yesterday in the Legislative Council will be reflected in these actions. There was a substantial convergence between the speeches of the President and the Prime Minister.‘

He also noted that there is a change in the European position. ‘We began to the see the effects of the new government within minutes. Norway announced that it had decided to lift the embargo immediately and deal with the Palestinian government and all of its members without exception, restoring normal relations. France, Spain and Italy are moving in the same direction, as is Sweden.‘
