Ramallah, 19-06-07: Mustafa Barghouthi, member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, stated that the only way out of the current crisis and away from Palestinian internal infighting is to have democratic elections as soon as possible.
He emphasized the necessity of calming the situation on the ground in order to protect the rule of law and democracy in Palestine, and called for a temporary government of transition to lead the way towards these elections, to stand for unity between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and to ensure security for all Palestinians.
Dr. Barghouthi insisted that Palestinians should not forget that it is the occupation which is destroying Palestinian land and its future, and that the goal of the Palestinian struggle is to end the occupation. “All Palestinians should stand together to protect the geography and the demography of Palestine and to reject the Israeli plans to prevent the creation of a fully sovereign Palestinian state” he said.
He also warned that internal infighting serves the interests of the Israeli occupation, and that Palestinians should clearly understand this and refuse to become involved in it.
Finally Dr. Barghouthi concluded that the hope for a viable Palestinian will be destroyed if the current crisis continues.
