Palestine in the World Social Forum Global Action Day on 26 January 2008

Ramallah, 22-01-08: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, and Jamal Juma, head of the Stop the Wall Campaign, both contact persons for the Global Action Day in Palestine, detailed at a press conference today the activities and actions for a just peace that will take place in Palestine.

The World Social Forum movement brings together people and movements all around the world to push forward a global agenda of progressive changes for democracy, human rights and social justice.  This year, the usual centralised social forum has been replaced by a coordinated global action day, during which numerous and diverse groups will organise a wide array of activities and actions all around the world.

The following actions will take place in Palestine:

1. A demonstration organised by the Palestinian National Initiative and the Stop the Wall Campaign in Ramallah at 12.00 on Saturday 26 January. Contact person: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi: 00972 599 254 218

2. A protest organized by the Gaza on my Mind Campaign (Gaza 3ala bale) in Ramallah. Contact person: Muhammad Al Attar: 00972 598 179 447

3. A protest in Nablus organized by a coalition of 40 local organizations.

4. A protest in the southern villages near Bethlehem organized by the local Popular Committee Against the Apartheid Wall will take place on Friday 25 January. Contact person: Sami Awad: 00972 599 674 989

Dr. Barghouthi added that numerous actions and events about Palestine will also take place around the world in London (UK), Paris (France), Mumbai (India), Sao Paolo (Brazil), Manila (Philippines), Beirut (Lebanon), Madrid (Spain) and many other locations on all continents.

Dr. Barghouthi expressed his wish that the collective actions of concerned and active citizens all around the world help bring about a just peace for Palestine.
