Ramallah, 01-07-08: The Palestinian National Initiative has gained membership of the Socialist International, a worldwide organisation of social democratic, socialist and labour parties that brings together 159 political parties and organisations from all continents.
The PNI’s membership was accepted as its Secretary General, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, is attending the XXIII Congress of the Socialist International in Athens, Greece from 30 June to 2 July.
Palestinian representation at the Congress includes Dr. Barghouthi and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas - both of whom gave speeches on the opening day
The Congress, being convened under the overarching theme of ‘Global Solidarity: The Courage to Make a Difference’ will address four key issues: climate change, peace and the resolution of conflicts, the world economy and the question of migration.
The Congress is hosted by Greece‘s main opposition leader, George Papandreou, who chairs the Socialist International. The Socialist International’s origins go back to the early international organisations of the labour movement. It has existed in its present form since 1951.
