Mustafa Barghouthi shows support for city of Nablus

Ramallah, 15-07-08: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, the General Secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative visited Nablus for the second time on Monday afternoon to show support to the residents of the city after the recent Israeli raids on the city Mall and a number of mosques and charity organizations last week.

After visiting the Old city and meeting its residents, hearing their grief and expectations, Barghouthi focused his support on the youth community in Nablus by holding a meeting with teenagers.

The Secretary General, along with the Palestinians Youth Forum, met around 40 students from Al Najah University to discuss and debate about the current situation and issues faced by youth students in Palestine.

The 41 years of Israeli occupation, and the siege on Nablus that have lasted for 7 years have incredibly devastated the Nablusian economy. As a result of the bad economic situation, the university fees are a luxury that everybody can no longer afford.

Barghouthi stressed on a law that was already ratified by PLC to establish a fund of scholarships or loans -depending on the student’s marks- that would be provided by the government and dedicated to offer the opportunity to every Palestinian youth to have a scholarship or a loan to study, without being subjected to discrimination or nepotism, and called the PA to implement such a program. PNI will lobby the government and the president to pass the law and establish the fund.

According to the Deputy, the entire project will cost less than 1% of the whole income that the government gets from the International Community. “This would also improve the University level in Palestine, and keep our best elements here, as the students wouldn’t have to leave the country to study abroad.”

Barghouthi showed support to the students from Nablus in their struggle for the right to education: “The conflict between Israel and Palestine is about to be or not to be. We have to keep on the struggle by thinking, studying and existing.”

In a country where more than 45% of the population is below 15-years old, Barghouti emphasized: “The youth generations are our future. It is now the time to invest in the next generations.” He added that “Despite the suffering of the city, Nablus is the Capital of dignity and resistance”, as the Israeli have been trying –for more than 41 years- to destroy the moral of the city, emphasizing on the role of the youth in the struggle.

Barghouti also visited Nablus city Mall that was raided by the Israeli occupation forces on the fifth day. The 70-shop compound, charities, schools and at least five societies were ordered closed and six mosques were raided.

He stressed on his fully committed support to the merchants of the Mall and thanked the traders for remaining open. Barghouthi also called on the P.A to defy the Israeli decision and to provide the storeowners concrete support, and also called on them to defy the Israeli army attempt to shut down a major private commercial center.
