Ramallah, 08-10-08: Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, and a delegation of representatives of PNI, met with Amer Musa, the Secretary General of the Arab League today in Cairo to discuss the prospects and urgent need for the establishment of a National Unity Government in Palestine.
Mustafa Barghouthi and Amer Musa called for an end to the media infighting, which has damaged Palestinian Unity and weakened the Palestinian position in the ongoing Annapolis Peace Process. Amer Musa, on behalf of the Arab League, emphasized the necessity of forming a unified Palestinian front in this critical and sensitive point in the Palestinian struggle for justice and statehood.
"Only through Unity can Palestinians hope to succeed in the ongoing negotiations, in which their counterpart, Israel is searching for any reasons for them to fail, and to blame us for this failure", said Mustafa Barghouthi.
Though the results of the Cairo Summit are yet unknown, it is the hope of the PNI delegation that preparations will be made for an enlarged National Unity Government that is capable of preparing for national elections at the Presidential and Parliamentary levels and undergoing the difficult process of reforming and depoliticizing the Palestinian security sector.
"The Palestinian Liberation Organization has to be restructured in a way that is more inclusive and which respect the rules and structure of democracy", said the Deputy.
Israel has worked to undermine Palestinian unity, not only geographically but politically as well. "This has effectively divided our energy and power to work toward justice for all Palestinians and challenge the apartheid policy which has been imposed by Israel for 40 years."
