Dr Barghouti Meets the Spain PM Zapatero and Calls For An Active Role Of The EU

Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative met on Thursday with the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and with the Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos.

Dr Barghouti discussed with PM Zapatero, focusing on the situation inside the occupied Palestinian territories. In the light of the intransigence of the Israeli Government and Netanyahu’s expansionist plans, Dr Barghouti underlined the importance of an active role of the European Union.

He explained that Israeli policy of settlement expansion kills any chance for peace. “ Netanyahu‘s rejection of any discussion about Jerusalem, refugees issue and definition of borders – continued Barghouti - is a clear evidence of a lack of willingness and seriousness in achieving peace." During the meeting, Dr Barghouti also emphasized the importance of the Goldstone Report and the need to implement its recommendations, with particular regard for the war crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip. Dr Barghouti also explained to the Spanish officials, the need of restoring a Palestinian national unity and a democratic system.

Dr Mustafa Barghouti recognized with gratitude Spanish Prime Minister’s unlimited support to the Palestinian people and their legitimate issues, pointing to the active role that Spain will play while taking on the rotating EU presidency next January.

Barghouthi accompanied Prime Minister Zapatero to meet musical groups, including groups of young Palestinians from all over the country (Nazareth, Bethlehem and other cities). From his side, Zapatero said that his country would intensify efforts to promote a just peace in the region and continue to support Palestinian people.
