On Wednesday morning in front of the assembled press, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi spoke and fielded questions concerning the recent electoral victory of Barack Obama and the status of Palestinian Unity efforts in Cairo in which he is playing a role.

Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi MP, the Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative strongly condemns the latest Israel closure on Gaza, leading to a severe shortage of fuel, and electricity shutdown.

The boat carrying supplies and a collection of Palestinian (including several who have lived abroad, one whom has not seen the shores of Gaza for forty years), Israelis, and international peace activists (among them a Nobel Prize winner and several European parliamentarians) has once more broken the siege on the Gaza Strip after speculation and hints from the Israeli authorities that they would not allow a repeat performance of the last successful voyage.

During a recent visit to Washington, I met with several members of Congress to discuss the prospects for Palestinian and Israeli peace. This included a marvelous, unexpected introduction to Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the courageous civil rights advocate. The Palestinian National Initiative, which I head, works to emulate the nonviolent resistance to segregation that Lewis personified. For too long, however, our best efforts have been stymied by America’s lack of evenhandedness. Many people in Washington believe the main obstacle is AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby.

Yesterday, Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, Secretary General of the Palestinian National Initiative, was present during national reconciliation talks taking place in the Egyptian capital Cairo, where he led the delegation of the PNI to the meeting.

It is hard to imagine that after all the coverage of Gaza you could go into an event in New York and walk out stunned, but such was my experience hearing Mustafa Barghouti this afternoon at Columbia University. The Palestinian doctor and politician

It was at the demonstration, attended by hundreds of Palestinian, Israeli and international peace activists, that the doctor first learned of Israeli President Shimon Peres’ decision to approve Netanyahu as the next Prime Minister
